St. John's Sleep Calls - a poem

Whisper to me goodnight, under the sulphur lights.
The smell of woodsmoke spiraling on the cool night breeze,
Straight into our bed, fills me up with dreams.
Cutting through it, I can taste the Oceans breath.
Listen hard, the call of the waves not far off.
The Earth and trees, the musky smell of fall approaching.
Soak it in, and sleep.

Our New Home - Newfoundland

We are here! It was a rather straight forward flight and everything worked out well. We had to toss an expensive bottle of toothpaste due to Robert's error putting it into his carry-on. The customs folks had a hard time figuring out what my buckwheat pillow was, crammed into my back pack. We also had our bag throughly investigated because we had a coffee grinder in a metal french press pot. I'm sure it looked pretty scary.

Speaking of coffee. The coffee I am currently sipping is dark. Really dark. And I love dark coffee. The wind is coming in the open window and is cool and misty feeling. Yesterday the sun was warm but the wind felt cold, in comparison to the hotter winds I was used to in Vancouver. I'm sure in reality the wind that blows in the summer here is just fresh...and the winter blows icy.

I'm still in disbelief we live here. Everyone is ridiculously kind. I was waiting outside Auntie Crae's shop on Water Street with Rowan, while Robert went in to buy us the best bauguette I have ever tasted, and about 9 lovely folks stopped to pet our dog. That would be unheard of in Vancouver, people crossed to the other side of the street to avoid her there (I blame mainly the Halti snout harness).

As of yet, I can say I love it here. My muscles hurt because the hills are literally kicking me ass. Everything is green green green. The folks are kind. The accents make me smile a mile. And I feel as though someone mixed up our tickets, and really we are back in County Wicklow, Ireland. To this, I am not complaining.

Having grown up with family from the East Coast, I can already hear my accent shifting. I've always said things a bit different (to the West Coast), and I fear (not) that within some years....I will actually understand the slang, and even perhaps speak it myself. Most curious, is the meaning of B'y. They put it on everything but toast, and I think it means the Canadian equivalent of Eh.

Time for porridge, then we are are going out to live!

Vegan Birkenstock <3

They've arrived!

Originally I had ordered the wrong size, so had to ship them back. Finding vegan Birkenstock's in Birki capital is hard, so I ordered the online at MooShoes. Lovely company to work with, sadly American so I paid a pretty penny on shipping. Here is the UK shop for Birkenstock's to show they do indeed carry vegan ones.

I'm smitten with them.

Pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

Olive's Homebirth (video)

I love watching this families journey through their second pregnancy and home waterbirth. Just so pretty and fun. It has many hits on youtube, a staggering number, but I thought I'd share anyways.

Happy Monday Folks!

Supporting Kayce - Her Beautiful Pumping Journey Post Loss

Kayce is a true friend. She is beautiful and strong. A safe and non-judgmental source of knowledge and guidance. A daily inspiration to thousands. When she started talking about her milk coming in, I was flooded with emotion. Namely the pain it must bring her to have the milk meant for her sweet boy Tyrion come into her breasts without his body to nourish. Many offered advise on how to encourage her milk to leave, and someone said why not pump. For her daughter Glade, or for donation.

Kayce lost her baby boy Tyrion Caelith at 13 weeks and 4 days. Please go to her blog here to read about her story.

And then, Kayce did something beyond words, she is pumping for babies in need. I'm not sure if she is using a milk bank, or private donation, but either way her rich milk made for a very young baby is doing a world of good. The only thing holding her back was the fact that her pump wasn't ideal for full time (at least for now) pumping. Read her post about it here.

I put a call out to pump companies on Twitter if they'd donate a pump to this worthy and hopefully healing emotional cause. Then shortly afterwards Erin came forward with a Ameda Elite breast pump, a hospital grade double pump, plus her offer of the attachment kit, some milk bags, teas and such a amazing gift of a pumping consult worth $90, being that Erin herself is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (ICBCLC). She was asking $350 for the above.

I started a donation fund in Kayce's name, hoping that people would begin with some small donations and collectively women around the internet would share Kayce's story and help raise the funds. I was shocked, that within just a few hours, Kayce had raised the funds for her pump!

There were only 7 contributers when the goal was reached, thanks to Brandi Hefner Doucet (DeepSouthDoula on Twitter). She generously offered a large sum of money and her story. The donation to Kayce was made in honor of her mother, who passed away a year ago. Brandi's mother lost two children to CHD and Spina Bifida, and knows she'd be very pleased with using some of the money from her estate sale to help Kayce with such a selfless act of kindess. Brandi herself has seen the benefits of breastmilk, having had a baby in the NICU in critical condition. I'd like to extend a humongous thank you to Brandi (and her mother) for making this possible so quickly. I'm still in awe.

But, the giving hasn't stopped there. Allie (bbybirthingmama) is offering 50 collection bags. Mama Goddess Birth Shop (mamagoddess) is offering a bag of More Milk Tea. And I know others have offered to donate items helpful during exclusively pumping. I think Kayce would love some wool breastpads, over disposable if people are willing (she mentioned it some weeks back for when her boy was born).

The fund for Kayce is still open, she will need on going herbs, storage bags, extra food, pads etc to support her through this awe inspiring journey to give. She is turning such a painful loss, into a beautiful gift.

You can directly donate to Kayce's paypal account by using the email address ekalbtwin@hotmail.com
Or use the donation fund I've set up to watch the numbers climb.

Thank you all so much for making this possible. This gift of breastmilk might be a baby's chance at life, or a mother's last wishes. This act of kindness on Kayce's part is beautiful. I hope that she finds much healing in her journey, and that it fills her heart with some light in the dark time.
