« Waiting, creating, patiently. »

In preparation of our 'one day baby', I've done a tiny bit of stashing things away, and making a few items. I have a few carriers on hand, some clothing items I cannot turn down at second hand stores, a few books, basically the right amount of adorable planning. Nothing over the top (or so I think).

We are planning to raise our children as gently as possible, both for them (and ourselves) and for the planet. We've spent hundreds of hours discussing what parenting choices we'd like to follow through with. One that both sits deep in our hearts is Elimination Communication (or, natural infant hygiene, or diaper free baby).  More on this in another post.

I whipped together some puddle pads, which are essentially pre-fold diapers. I made them from old flannel bedding and towels from the second hand shop. They are all different, some are the standard beautiful 3 panel fabric, others are free hand curves, and my favorites are the leaves. I used pale green threads. I think they came out beautifully, they are thick and soft and perfect for catching pees, for using as a burp cloth, for cleaning up messes, and I'm planning on making some larger ones for underneath the baby and I at night, for breastmilk leaking. They have already cleaned up a puddle of puppy pee, when she had an accident in the night. Robert in his sleep haze said they were very absorbent.

To make these, it cost about $10 for the supplies. I have 2 more sheets and some extra towels I plan to use still. Just waiting for the crafting bug to hit again.  Soule Mama has a pattern for pre-folds in her book Handmade Home that gave me the nudge to get sewing. The idea of the pattern is 4 layers for the outer fabric, and a layer of towel for the most absorbent area. I made most with towel throughout, geared for EC.

These small crafts keep the wait for our baby to come into our lives feel just a little bit shorter. It is such a lovely feeling crafting up dreams. Dreams of what our child might be.

Now into the linen closet they go, waiting.

These are cool. A genuine question: were you to have a boy, would you fold this over the top to stop pee from shooting everywhere? Not too sure how they 'work,' but like the idea..
