Baby Mackenzie
I first met Amber when I was 35 weeks pregnant; she was my midwife’s attendant. We bonded quickly, and Amber assisted the midwife for the remainder of my pre-natal check-ups and the birth of my daughter. I felt very fortunate to have Amber as part of my birth team. I enjoyed each visit I had with her because she continuously taught me about my baby and how to best prepare for labour. I had read many books on pregnancy and birthing, but they were not nearly as effective as my birth team, of which Amber was a critical part, in relating knowledge and experience, and creating a calming and nurturing environment.
At my 37 week check-up there were some indications that I might go into labour, so the midwife suggested that she should check my cervix. My husband was in the living room, and the midwife asked if he wanted to be in the bedroom while I was being checked. Not thinking it was anything other than a regular check-up, he declined and we carried on. Amber was at the bedside and held my hand. “Very sweet of her” I thought, but I quickly realized how much I needed that hand. The intensity of the shock and pain from the procedure was unexpected, and Amber guided me in controlling my breathing, relaxing my body, and focusing. Her calming voice and firm, reassuring grip on my hand helped me cope with the pain. I was told I was 2 cm dilated and that my baby had hair. Holy crap! The realization that I wasn’t going to be pregnant forever and that my baby could be coming at any moment sent a rush of emotion through me and I started to sob (for joy and fear).
I went into labour a week later, somewhat unexpectedly. My water did not break and my contractions had not started, but there was a bit of blood. I feared I was losing my baby and began to panic. When Amber and the midwife arrived I was a worried, frantic mess. Amber immediately went to work, asserting her supportive and calm demeanour that comes so naturally to her. She was by my side (rescue remedy in hand) for what seemed like an eternity. Throughout my labour, Amber was an integral coach and support person for me. She was able to understand what I needed and when, often without saying a word. She kept me focused and stuck with me through all the highs and lows of labour. When you meet Amber you will quickly understand what I am saying about her calming ora. Whenever she sat next to me my stress and fear melted away.
Amber is a well balanced person with a wealth of knowledge on many life topics, but she is most passionate about babies and mothers. I was fortunate to have her share some of her talents with me, as she taught me about caring for babies, caring for myself, dealing with new mother anxieties, breast-feeding , baby-wearing, and the power of the placenta.
Thank you Amber for being such a big part of the most important moments in my life. You have inspired me to simplify my life, and enjoy the beauty that surrounds me. Stay positive, sweet and wonderfully you.
